"A friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil; but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls and small, silly presents every so often - just to save it from drying out completely."
Since our move here, we have had friends from all parts of our life help to make it easier than it would have been without them. Phone calls, emails, hand-written letters, skype calls, call-ins to book club, care packages of goodies we long for (Alterra, crystal light, books, Packers wear, Valentine's gifts, etc!).....we need and love them all! I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of these! A talk on the phone for 5 minutes is a total rejuvenation! A care package...it's like Christmas morning! A hand-written letter...we reread it 20 times! It is so wonderful to have personal connections to home.
And then to share this new world with friends from home...:)
I was the "luckiest girl in Singapore" to have 4 friends from home come to visit. It is a rare treat to have anyone visit from home...it is not easy. Aside from the long time away from home and the expense...the flight is not on the radar of a "good time."
I loved every minute of the visit - and I loved hearing their first impressions! After 10 months I think I have lost that and have become rather immune to the differences here. It was really great to relive those moments of how different the air feels, how different it smells, how different it looks and how different everything tastes.
Kim, Kim, Kathy & Amber were total troopers...I had their days scheduled from morning to night to try and cram as much Asia into their 7 days as possible!
| Day 1 - riding the "Singapore Flyer" |
| And then enjoying a Singapore Sling...yum on a hot day! |
| A night out for traditional Singapore "chili crab" |
| Early morning day 2....tai chi in the Botanical Gardens |
| Small people on big tree... |
| A tour through the Botanical Gardens afterwards |
| Traditional dumplings for lunch |
| A tour of Little India |
| Dinner on banana leaves in Little India after a LONG and hot day! |
| Day 3...tour of Chinatown |
| Market in Chinatown |
| Yes you read that right...and they even "prepare" them for you on the spot |
| Ahh...Day 4.....Phuket, Thailand |
| From our beach |
| Happiness all around:) |
| We all rode elephants |
| And saw stunning Buddhist temples |
| But in the end...it was all about beach & friends |
| ....and a little bit of home |
Since there is nothing so well worth having as friends, never lose a chance to make them.
And after our long week I celebrated by introducing old friends to new. Everyone asks, "how was it having your friends from home be in Singapore with your new friends?"
My response..."it was the best of both worlds...."
In my mind, if you are true to who you are, you gravitate to the same sort of people...with no pretense. Seeing my friends on both sides of the world - become friends themselves - was as it should have been...and nothing could make me happier.
